Wood Flooring 101

Posted: Thursday, February 25, 2010

Wood flooring is not only an investment but it is one of the easiest ways to enhance the beauty of your home as well .  Hardwood flooring has one huge advantage over other kinds of flooring and that is it will always be in style, whatever the current trend.  The cost can be expensive, but the beauty and elegance in such an investment will be worth it.

Hardwood floors can easily last ten to twenty five years and it all depends on two factors.  First is the quality of the hardwood selected and second is how well the floor is maintained by it's owners.  Hardwood is available in a variety of different shades, styles and designs and can therefore cater to the most discerning of tastes. With hardwood flooring, there is no need to compromise.

Hardwood Choices

Generally, there are two kinds of hardwood that are available to be used as flooring i.e.solid hardwood and engineered hardwood.  Solid hardwood is non-altered solid wood and engineered hardwood is strips of wood, cross woven and glued together.  In addition to these factors another factor to consider is the kind of hardwood you want to have installed. There are three kinds of hardwood: plank, parquet and strip. All of which serve a different purpose.

Installation of solid hardwood flooring can be tricky and definitely requires a bit of patience. It is recommended that you hire a professional this task. The installation of hardwood floors is just the first step; it then requires special care, afterwards.  Dusting and cleaning are not the only way for taking care of your floors.  It is advised to use the polishes which are solutions and pastes specifically manufactured for the care of your floors. When dusting, cleaning, and/or polishing the floor, make sure not to drag heavy equipment as it could leave un-repairable marks over the floor, damaging its look.
