Tile and Stone - A Great Flooring Option

Posted: Thursday, February 25, 2010

There are wide ranges of flooring options available in the market today, such as wood, bamboo, cork etc..  A flooring option that gives you the benefit of durability, beauty with relatively cheaper prices is tile and stone flooring. Tile and stone flooring or more specifically, ceramic and porcelain, are the most popular options these days as they offer superior durability and virtually unlimited design and style choices.

You will not run out of options with ceramic tile flooring as it comes in a variety of patterns, sizes and colors. There is a wide variety of porcelain, marble, granite, glass and natural stone tiles avaialble in many different styles.  Sometimes this availability of options may seem a bit overwhelming, but once you've filtered your options by color, size and application you're bound to be left with the perfect tile.

There are many different types of tile and stone and they are generally classified by composition or manufacturing process. Quarry tiles are made by extrusion of shale or natural clay (from a quarry), natural stone is literaly cut pieces of natural stone (or loose stone), while most mosaic tiles, floor tiles and wall tiles are manufactured.  Manufactured glass, porcelain and ceramic tiles are the most popular as they can be created in such a wide variety of shapes, colors, and designs.

A few tile installation tips:

  • Make sure to buy spare tiles in case any of the tiles are broken after being installed.
  • Try being creative with the tiles and do not place them in a grid. Placing them in a diagonal pattern would add beauty to the room.
  • Don’t bother to lay complicated patterns if you want economical flooring as it will not only add to the cost but also demand expertise for its installation.
  • Installation of ceramic tiles is not a difficult task and can be easily installed by doityourselfers. All that is required for installation is a little guidance and patience. (See our Ceramic Tile Installation article for instructions) The maintenance of tile and stone flooring is on of the easiest to maintain.  For cleaning purposes, regular damp mopping can do the job.
  • Ceramic tile is a very good option for those who are more interested in durable and inexpensive flooring. You will reap the benefits of your investment as it is long-lasting and requires almost no maintenance.
